Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period Ends Dec. 7: Your Options

November 09, 2020

Now is the time to make changes to your current Medicare plan, switch your Medicare Advantage plan, change from original Medicare or your Medicare Supplement plan to a Medicare Advantage plan and add or remove prescription drug coverage.

Are you happy with your current Medicare plan?

A Medicare Advantage plan offers more coverage and benefits than Original Medicare, including financial protection that caps what you spend, so you’re not stuck with unexpected costs.

Medicare Advantage plans also offer low premiums and prescription drug coverage, so if you have a Medicare Supplement plan, you could potentially find more ways to reduce your monthly costs.

Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period

Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period, also commonly referred to as AEP, runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 each year. During this time, Medicare beneficiaries can re-evaluate their coverage – whether it’s just Original Medicare, a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan – and enroll in a new plan, switch plans or drop their current plan.

During the Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period, you can:

  • Switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage (as long as you’re enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B, and you live in the Medicare Advantage plan’s service area).
  • Switch from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare (plus a Medicare Part D plan, and possibly a Medicare Supplement plan).
  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
  • Switch from one Medicare Part D prescription drug plan to another.
  • Enroll in a Medicare Part D plan if you didn’t enroll when you were first eligible for Medicare. If you haven’t maintained other creditable coverage, a late-enrollment penalty may apply.
