What Qualifies You for Medicare’s Special Enrollment Period?

March 31, 2021

When life happens, it’s good to know you have choices in Medicare Advantage coverage. You may qualify for a Medicare Special Enrollment Period.

When a major change in your life or circumstances takes place, you may need to make a change to your Medicare coverage. Medicare’s Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) allow you to change your Medicare plan outside of your Initial Enrollment Period and beyond regular enrollment periods due to extenuating circumstances.

Below are just some of the SEPs that allow individuals ages 65 and older, based on eligibility, to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan:

  • Being new to the area: Those who recently moved to the area can switch to a new Medicare Advantage plan 2 months after they begin living at their new address.
  • Late retirees leaving an employer’s or union’s plan (including COBRA): Those who are retiring have up to 2 months after their employer’s or union’s plan ends to select a plan.
  • No longer eligible for Medicaid: Those who no longer qualify for Medicaid can change plans up to 3 months from the date of no longer being eligible or being notified of non-eligibility, whichever is later.

If you are eligible to enroll during a SEP, the right Medicare plan coverage has never been more important to keep you healthy. CarePartners of Connecticut is the state’s only Medicare Advantage plan created with local Hartford HealthCare doctors to help you get the care you need.
