5 Hartford HealthCare Hospitals Awarded Spring 2023 ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grades From Leapfrog Group

May 03, 2023

Five Hartford HealthCare hospitals earned the highest possible grade for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, highlighting work that protects patients from preventable harm and error.

“What is especially notable in this latest round of Leapfrog grades is they primarily reflect performance at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Ajay Kumar, MD, executive vice president and chief clinical officer. “We are extremely proud of our teams, and applaud the added effort it took to persevere and shine under such challenging circumstances.”

Hartford HealthCare facilities earning “A” grades from Leapfrog include: Backus, Windham and Hartford hospitals, and MidState and St. Vincent’s medical centers. Of the 28 graded hospitals in the state, only 12 hospitals received an “A” for the spring of 2023. Grades are issued twice a year.

“At the national level, we saw deterioration in patient safety with the pandemic,” says Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “These hospitals received ‘As’ despite those challenges. I congratulate all the leaders, staff, volunteers and clinicians who, together, made that possible.”

Leapfrog, the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on work that prevents medical errors and patient harm, assigns hospitals across the country grades from A to F based on more than 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections. The group also examines systems hospitals have in place to protect patients from harm.

“Patient safety is our top concern every day and with every patient,” adds Stephanie Calcasola, MSN, RN-BC, vice president of quality and safety. “Hartford HealthCare colleagues live the system’s commitment to always creating safe spaces to provide care to those who need us.”
