Artificial Urinary Sphincter Alert Study Wins Best Poster at This Year’s American Urologic Association (AUA) National Meeting

Dr. Philip Olson, Urology Resident at the Tallwood Institute, presented the findings from a recent study conducted at Hartford Hospital to attendees of the AUA national meeting in San Antonio.  The study won the blue ribbon for best poster, and there was an overwhelmingly positive reaction from colleagues, with many institutions expressing a desire to implement the alert in their hospital system.

According to Dr. Olson, the artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) remains the gold standard treatment option for men with post-prostatectomy incontinence. Unfortunately, many medical providers are unaware of when a patient has an AUS. This may lead to inadvertent urethral catheterization, without device de-activation. Dr. Richard Kershen of the Tallwood Urology Group at Hartford Hospital created a novel, best practice advisory in the electronic medical record to alert medical staff of a patient's AUS. After the advisory was implemented in the system, there have been no episodes of inadvertent catheterization leading to urethral trauma in men with an AUS. The alert has strong safety implications for men with an AUS and may limit these adverse events in the future. 

Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Research Presented at IFSO conference in Naples, Italy

Dr. Devika Umashanker, metabolic weight loss specialist, presented an excellent talk at the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) conference held recently in Naples, Italy. Based on her presentation, Prevalence and Risk Factors of Migraine in a Clinic-based Sample of Patients Pursuing Surgical or Medical Treatment for Obesity, Dr. Umashanker was awarded the IFSO integrated health early stage scientific investigator award. The study was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Brian Grosberg, Director of the HHC Headache Center and his team.

Dr. Oscar Serrano appointed to the American College of Surgeons Scientific Forum Committee

We are proud to announce that Dr. Oscar Serrano was recently appointed by the American College of Surgeons Board of Regents as a member to the Owen H. Wangensteen Scientific Forum Committee. In this role Dr. Serrano will be responsible for coordinating the program of Transplant and HPB abstracts to be presented at the Clinical Congress for the next three years. Dr. Serrano has been involved with the Scientific Forum during his residency and fellowship training and as an attending surgeon. We are very excited for his opportunity to represent Hartford HealthCare at the national level in such a prestigious professional organization.
